Thomas Henry Willing was born in 1889 in Grimsby, but his father James Perry Willing was born in East Stonehouse in Devon in 1859. Thomas Henry married Phoebe Ann Pearce in Grimsby in 1914. They had four children, Thelma (b 1914), Harry (1915-1993), Nellie (b 1919) and Jim (1923-1997).
