Lost at sea Leader (fishing boat, Official Number 68246) Born 23 January 1850 at Udimore, Sussex to John Cruttenden and Hannah Hawkins. In 1861 lived at Road End Cottages, Udimore; by 1870 he was a fisherman at Grimsby, Lincolnshire. On 23 February 1876 he married Mary Elizabeth Kitching a local girl. In 1881 John was skipper of the Hildyard Marshall,a Dandy, with four crew, engaged in trawl fishing. On census night the vessel was 40 miles ENE of Spurn Head. On the 6 March 1883 John was the Master of his own vessel, the Leader, fishing the Dogger Bank when one of the most appalling gales ripped through the fishing fleet claiming many lives, amongst them John and his crew.
