Napoléon described Godoy as a man of genius. Manuel Godoy y Alvarez de Faria was born to a poor family but rose to become the favourite of king Charles IV of Spain and especially of his wife; Marie-Louise of Parma who became his lover. He was largely responsible for the pro-French stance of Spain and he aligned the Spanish fleet with the French at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Godoy personally benefited from the Treaty of Fontainebleau in 1807 when the south of Portugal was awarded to Godoy and his family. Whenn Charles IV was overthrown in 1808 and Napoléon installed his own brother as king of Spain. Godoy went into exile in France; dying in comparative poverty in Paris; living on a pension from King Louis-Philippe of France.
