Le Masson was an engineer and architect; who tutored the nephews of Louis XVI (the sons of the future Louis XVIII). From 1791-93 he was chief architect of the département that included Versailles; and he received several commissions from Louis XVI. In 1793 he was obliged to flee the revolutionaries but in 1795 he was appointed chief architect to the Lower Seine département. He worked in Rouen from 1802-11; and officially retired in 1813. However shortly afterwards his old mentor; the new King Louis XVIII; recalled him and appointed him as assistant commander of the château of Rambouillet until 1821. The king also raised him to aristocratic rank.
