Keppel joined the British army in the 1770s; and was colonel of the 3rd West India regt from 1795-1806. He was promoted to Lt.General in 1803; and was Governor of Martinique from 1796-1802. From 1806-1811 he was colonel of the King's Royal Rifle Corps; and from 1811-1828 he was colonel of the 67th Regt of Foot. In 1815 he was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath; and in 1827 he was appointed to the Privy Council and also as the last Governor of Guernsey. From 1828-1834 he was colonel of the 2nd (Queen's Royal) Regiment of Foot. He was a Groom of the Bedchamber and Equerry to king George IV.
