Originally a member of the Jesuits; in 1765 Théibault was appointed professor of grammar at the Berlin Militairy Academy. He became a close friend of Frederick the Great of Prussia; and edited many of his works. In 1784 he returned to France; and in 1789 he was the only person authorised to publish a journal of the deliberations of the Etats Généraux before the revolutionary parliament. He was chief secretary to the Directory government in 1795; and then taught grammar at the renowned Lycée Charlemagne in Paris from 1799-1803; when he became director of the lycée in Versailles.
