Commissioned in 1789; he rose with extraordinary speed to the rank of brigadier-general then divisional general in 1794. In 1796 he captured Stuttgart. He was principally deployed in Germany; until Napoléon appinted him commander of the French armies for the Iberian Campaign in 1801; where he served with distinction until 1809. In 1812 he served in Russia; and was raised to the rank of Marshal. The following year he was captured at Dresden; and held prisoner until 1814. He remained loyal to the restored Bourbon kings in 1815; and was minister of war and then the navy and the colonies from 1817-1819. His name is inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe.
