Born in Warsaw in an impoverished noble family; he was entrusted with several diplomatic missions by the last king of Poland; Stanislas Poniatowski. He was a Polish nationalist; but both Catherine the Great and Tsar Paul 1st of Russia tried to convnce him to accept the Russian annexation of Poland. Removed from militairy office; he pursued intellectual endeavours and became a member of the Royal Society of London; and in 1809 he finally settled in Paris after extensive travel in Europe. Here he continued his academic work; notably writing on mathematics and mining; but also on the decline of Poland. he remained a favourite of the exiled king of Poland until his final days.
