A Radical politician who in his youth knew Berlioz; Georges Sand and Liszt; Schloecher was sent by his father to Mexico; the USA and Cuba; where he developed his hatred of slavery. In France he became a journalist and campaigned for the abolition of slavery; which he achieved in France and the French empire in 1848. He became a Radical politician; and resisted the rise of the future Napoléon III; and he was on the same barricade as Alphonse Baudin when the latter was killed. Exiled in the UK under Napoléon III; he frequently saw his friend Victor Hugo. After the fall of Napoléon III; he returned to France and re-entered the French Parliament. In 1949; his remains were transferred to the Panthéon (the ultimate accolade in France) along with those of the first black person to receive the same honour; Félix Eboué.
