Descended from a distinguished French Hugenot family (his father was the Hugenot minister; and his ancestors included theologians and historians); Frédéric followed his father as French Hugenot minister in Berlin. He attracted the attention of Prince Henry of Prussia; brother of Frederick the Great; and Prince Henry arranged for Frédéric to take up the appointment of professor of history at the Berlin Military Academy. In 1806 he was appointed tutor to the future king Frederick William IV of Prussia; and in 1831 he became the Foreign Minister.
