In 1790; Desportes was elected as the first mayor of Montmartre. He pursued a successful career during the revolutionary and Napoléonic periods; notably as a diplomat and personal secretary to Lucien Bonaparte. He was also responsible for bringing Geneva under French control. He later became a member of the French parliament; and a supporter of the future Napoléon III.
