Bougainville was one of the most distinguished French admirals and explorers of the 18th century. He sailed around the globe in 1766; and was a contemporary to the English explorer Captain Cook. He later served in the French naval actions of the American War of Independence; and the revolutionary conflicts. The bougainvillea flower is named in his honour.
