Trained as a teacher and after rising through the education ministry; he designed the cultural pavillion at the Universal Exhibition of 1878. From 1880-1885 he directed the new Ecole Normale Supérieure in Cairo; and received the title of Bey. He then returned to Paris and directed the Egyptian School in Paris. until 1887.
