Distant relations of the great plawyright; the London Shakespears had a strong history of service in the East India Company; and John Talbot followed in this tradition. His uncle; of the same name; married the aunt of William Makepeace Thackeray; and the author of the same name grew up with his Shakespear cousins. This grave is directly opposite that of Sir Theophilus Metcalfe who also served in the British service in India and died in Paris in the same year; and was married to a Shakespear-Thackeray cousin.
