Born the Marquis de las Cases (the title of count was a Napoleonic gift); he at first joined the Counter-Revolutionaries in England; and survived the ill-fated Royalist rebellion in western Francce in 1795. He later returned to France and allegiance to Napoléon who named him chamberlain. He returned to England in 1814 but rallied to Napoléon in 1815. He was a noted historian; and accompanied Napoléon to St Helena until he was explled in 1816. His memoirs form one of the principal sources on the life of Napoléon.
