Born in Canonbury; London and educated at Dulwich College; he studied chemistry at Birkbeck Institute London whilst working as a police court clerk. He solved the problem of separating phosphorus from pig iron in the Bessemer converter. He later refined his invention which he patented and which had widespread success.
