The nephew of the ceramcist Albrecht Türrschmiedt; and the son of a member of parliament; he was also of distinguished Jewish descent as the great nephew of the author Rahel Varnhagen von Ense. Walter lived with his uncle Ferdinand in Berlin. He became chief librarian to kaiser Frederick III and also a noted translator.
