William Waldren Wescombe was the son of George and Francies[sic] Wescombe, and the second of nine children. He was born in Guestling, Sussex, on 23rd April 1894 according to his birth certificate, though his naval record says 1893. He joined the Navy on 21st September 1911, and at the time of his death was a Stoker 1st Class on H.M.S. Penelope. He died from diphtheria in the Royal Naval Hospital at Shotley on 31st December 1915, and is also remembered on the War Memorial in Crowborough, (East) Sussex, his parents' place of residence at the time of his death.
