Erwin was the son of Rudolf (Rezso) and Ida Steiner and was born in Budapest. Rudolf was an inventor and industrialist and managing director of the Hungarian bauxite industry but was persecuted under the Jewish laws, despite his catholic faith. The family fled to Turkey and later to London. After studying in Vienna, Erwin became a leading chemical and process engineer. He was married with three children.
