John Stirling was born c1860, and was immediately adopted by John Cockburn and his wife Margaret Wands. He lived in Cambuslang until he married Chryssie Newlands, then departed for a banking post in Edinburgh, where he rose to the position of manager. He died on 29.12.1930 of 'apparent heart disease' in the Edinburgh University Club on Princes Street. They had one daughter, who went on to marry a solicitor in England. John had only one sibling, who was surrogated by his father's younger brother Daniel, and his wife Isabella.
