Henry Mylne was Mayor of Wokingham for ten years. During the First World War he was Wokingham’s War Mayor, giving all his time to recruiting tribunal work, food production and war savings in addition to his civic duties. At the cessation of hostilities he became Wokingham's Peace Mayor and conducted the celebrations with great success. During the ceremonies he was presented with a silver tray and the Mayoress received a silver cake basket in recognition of their services. A native of Edinburgb, Henry and his wife and daughter came to Wokingham at the beginning of the century. The family at first resided in Field House in Gipsy Lane and later in Staverton at 25, Murdoch Road. Henry was a member of the Wokingham urban sub-committee; churchwarden of All saints’ church for nearly seventeen years and one of the governors of the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. In the early part of September !919, he went to Edinburgh for a much needed rest after his labours for town and council. But it was soon evident that he had been under greater strain than had been imagined and he died in that year on the 21st October. On the day of his funeral in Edinburgh and, at the same hour, a memorial service was held at All Saints’ Church in Wokingham. Mylne Square was named in his memory.
