in memory of his wife and parents. There are no names or dates visible on the stone so identification is uncertain but it seems likely that the gravestone commemorates Mary Forbes, the wife of Robert Downie (1827-1911), who died on 9 February 1860 - her death certificate gives her burial place as Parish Churchyard, Hamilton. Robert's parents were John Downie and Mary Carr, both of them deceased at the time of Robert's marriage in 1855.
