John Whiteoak was born near Skipton, Yorkshire. In 1851 he was at Thorpe Green Hall, Township of Thorpunderwoods, in the employ of Basil Thomas Woodd, Barrister and magistrate. Mr Woodd, his wife and six children were listed with nine servants, including: Mary Hardcastle / Serv / Unm / 30 / Housemaid / Yorks, Boroughbridge John Whitoake / Serv / U / 26 / Groom / Yorks, Halton (or Malton) These two were married in September 1851 at Little Ouseburn. By 1858 John was a coachman in Knaresborough, but by 1871 he was an innkeeper in Great Ouseburn, Boroughbridge, and he and Mary had five surviving children, one daughter having died in Knaresborough in 1863. They kept the Greyhounds Inn (later Grey Hounds Hotel) in Boroughbridge until John's death in 1898.
