Jane; as she was known; was born to a successful Scottish merchant family who emigrated to New South Wales from Greenock in Scotland. She was known for being socially ambitious; and appears in the diary of her neighbour and friend Marie Bashkirtseff who is also buried in this cemetery. Several of her children made distinguished marriages. One son married a great granddaughter of King William IV of England; and a daughter married the future 4th Marquess of Anglesey.
