Francis was born at Newbridge near Wath in 1773 shortly after the death of his elder brother, Francis. He was baptised at Middlesmoor but died later that year and was subsequently buried at Pateley Bridge. His baptism records him as the son of Barnaby Horner of Daubergill. (Daubergill forms the parish boundary between Middlesmoor and Pateley Bridge, which explains why this Horner family performed some ceremonies in one church and some in the other).
