The follow note is stored against John Dodds record:

Master Mariner; who died at sea John Dodds MAY be the father of Jane Dodds, who married Francis Smith Nelson in 1840. On their marriage certificate, John Dodds is named as a mariner and the implication is that he is still alive on the date of their marriage (24 Feb 1840) - this would fit in with the MI. I found Eleanor Dodds (with some difficulty) in the 1841 census, with 5 children, living in Cowpen (as were Jane and Francis Smith Nelson). I also found her in the 1851 census, with her son Philip and his wife Elizabeth. But on FreeBMD, there is a note saying that, on Philip's marriage certificate, it says his father was called Philip also. However, I have found on FreeBMD a marriage between George Smith and Frances Dodds in Tynemouth in 1853. Frances was with her mother Eleanor in 1841 and 1851 (age in 1851 was 16), and I think that proves that John and Eleanor Dodds are Jane Dodds' parents.
