In the Autumn of 1894 James’ mother died, at or soon after the birth of his younger brother and the family lived in Hawnby thereafter During the war James enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery, becoming Gunner number 223270. Unfortunately, we don’t know which Brigade he was part of so we don’t know exactly where he was stationed, although we do know that he served overseas. After the war James returned to the Bilsdale area and in the autumn of 1924 he married Mabel Kitching. The couple had two children, Marjorie born on 24th October 1925 and Hazel born in the autumn of 1927. In 1939 the family were living in Swainby and James was a horseman and general farm worker.
