Thomas Spiking Lilley was born in 1824 in Tumby, Kirkby-upon-Bain, near Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Jane, his wife, nee Cammack, was born in Coningsby in 1826, also near Horncastle. He came to North Yorkshire for his work as a joiner.
