Mary Goodman (nee Willis) was born in Bishop Auckland, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Willis, Lodging House Keepers at 64 Newgate Street. She married Mark Goodman, a police constable, in 1868. They moved to Stockton-on-Tees to run the Portrack Hotel in the 1870s and had four children: John, Elizabeth, Sarah (Kitty) and Charles (Charles died in Flanders in 1914). Mary died from cirrhosis of the liver.
