The family of Little of Over Liberton built this tomb in 1683 to commemorate William Little Provost of Edinburgh and his brother Clement Little (1581) who bequeathed his collection of books to the City of Edinburgh This enabled the establishment of the library of the College of Edinburgh which was founded in 1583
