James Hogg Russell was educated at George Heriot's School, Edinburgh winning dux prizes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and was an athelete and rugby player of distinction.A Bisley crackshot he won the Cup as the outstanding shot at 1,000 yards. He was a prizewinner in the Final Examinations of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 1932. Aged only 28 he was appointed Chief Surveyor of William Arnott McLeod Ltd one of Scotland's largest construction companies of that time and during WW2 was seconded to the Admiralty as civilian contractor on top secret infrastructure projects including the Invergordon Sunderland Flying Boat project which employed 400 men and was an integral part of the U Boat reconnaissance programme. In 1946 he founded James H Russell & Co (Contractors) Limited a highly regarded and successful Building & Public Works Company synonomous with many major building projects employing over 150 people throughout East Central Scotland.
