Margaret married Rev James Anderson Beattie in 1889 in Manhattan. He was a missionary with the Dutch Reformed Church of America in Chittoor, India for 20 years. They had been back to USA for leave and set sail to return to India on the Lusitania in May 1915. The ship was torpedoed by a German submarine off Ireland with great loss of life. James Beattie lost his life and his body was recovered and buried in The Old Church Cemetery, Cobh, County Cork, Ireland. Margaret survived and was picked up after spending four and a half hours in the water. Later that same year she set sail from UK to India, despite the risks, and continued her missionary work until 1921.
