1958 husband of Emily HitchcockHITCHCOCK, EBENEZER, was born at Colchester on December 29, 1869, and passed away at Epsom on September 19, 1958. As a young man he entered the printing trade but under the influence of the Rev. W. Skinner of Sebert Road Church, Forest Gate, he offered himself for the Christian ministry and was trained at Nottingham College. He was ever grateful for the wise counsel and sound judgment of Dr. Paton his principal, and was his last surviving student. He was ordained to the Christian ministry at Woodford Green in 1896, as assistant to the Rev. W. E. Anderton, where he remained seven years, being called to Andover in 1903. His seven years there were marked by faithful and devoted labours, both in the town and church. In 1910 he settled at Weybridge, where the church still remembers him with gratitude as a faithful and loving pastor. In 1917 he went to Epsom, and here for eighteen years he exercised a gracious and fruitful ministry. In 1926, he suffered the loss of his first wife, who had been his constant helpmate since their marriage in 1899. With characteristic fortitude, supported by his family, he bore this heavy blow, until in 1933 he married the gracious lady who was to be the loving companion of his last years. Leaving Epsom in 1935, he served the Surrey churches, especially in the villages, taking charge of Hindhead from 1942 to 1945. To the delight of his people he returned to Epsom to retire, and the church honoured him and itself by appointing him Minister Emeritus. He was a man of strong character, forthright and fearless in utterance, and conduct. He had a wonderful facility for making friends, among whom he numbered the late Lord Rosebery. A great student and an avid reader to the last, his sermons were passionate for truth, and ever called his hearers to a sincere commitment to the Master and Lord he so faithfully loved and served. Besides his widow, he left behind two sons and a daughter to thank God for so triumphant a life. From: The Congregational Year Book 1959, p. 421

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

For personal use - Emily and Ebenezer are ancestors of my husband. I have an obituary for Ebenezer from The Congregational Year Book 1959, so this image would complement that
(requested on 04 09 2014)
I share direct ancestors with Rev Ebenezer Hitchcock - John Hitchcock 1749-1825 and Martha Nevard c1749-1805 - who were my 4 x great grandparents. Note of interest: John Hitchcock is the 4 x great uncle of film director Sir Alfred Hitchcock. I have done a huge amount of research on the Hitchcock family that I am happy to share with proven relatives. Many thanks. Dawn.
