Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Thomas King is my maternal fourth great Grandfather. He was born in Southmoor, Berkshire either in 1789 or 1790 passing away at the age of 80. At some stage Thomas moved to Thetford where he married Elizabeth Smith (1786 – 1824) on the 20 April 1818. They lived in Prospect Row, Thetford and had two daughters; Mary King b. 1820 and Ann King b. 1822. From at an early age Thomas’ occupation was a Wheelwright and in the census of 1861 it is noted he employed one person with one apprentice. Ann was residing with her father who, by this stage, was widowed twice. Thomas’ eldest daughter Mary and her husband Robert Dersley (1821 – 1873), who are my third great grandparents, together with their six young children, sailed from Southampton on the 15 July 1861 arriving in Algoa Bay, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa on the 6 Sep 1861. Mary passed away in 1895 at the age of 75 and is laid to rest next to Robert in the Old Cemetery, Grahamstown, South Africa. Thank you so much for the care taken in photographing Thomas’ headstone and making it accessible. Caryn O’Reilly South Africa
