Amy Agnes "Amy" Russell	1896	42	1854	first name on monument	younger daughter of Rev. Auriol Barker of Baslow, Derbyshire. They were married in Gosforth Church, Cumbria, on 2nd September 1880. She had no children but died in childbirth fifteen years later on 3rd January 1896, much lamented, at Copsley, Outwood, the home of their friend Mrs Dyce Alexander
Rev Edward Bacheler Russell	1900	48	1852	husband of Amy Agnes Russell	Edward married secondly Mary Dorothea Barclay, on 15th September 1897 at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. They went immediately to take up a missionary post in South India but returned home the following March ready for the birth of Ned. On the way home the ship on which they were travelling, the P&O s.s. China, went aground on the Island of Perim in the Red Sea. They arrived in London ten days later with the clothes they stood up in plus three stuffed crocodiles and a stuffed iguana. Regrettably Edward died two years later while they were on holiday in Scotland with the Barclay Family in a cycling accident. Edward is buried in this grave together with his two wives and also the ashes of his second son, Sandy.

Alexander Barclay "Sandy" Russell	1980	80	1900	step son of Amy Agnes Russell	Alexander (Sandy) was the second son of Edward Bacheler Russell and Mary Dorothea his second wife. With his first wife, Caroline, Sandy had three children, Bridget Mary Barclay Russell, George Christopher (Kit) Barclay Russell and Roger Barclay Russell. He was an artist who promoted art as a subject of importance in schools that lead to a country-wide movement and the strong interest in art that exists in schools now.
Mary Dorothea Russell nee Barclay	1955	84	1871	second wife of husband of Amy Agnes Russell	Eldest daughter of Robert Barclay of High Leigh, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. After Amy's death and while home in UK after his first missionary tour in South India, Edward married Mary Dorothea Barclay. They had two sons, Edward David Bacheler Russell (Ned), 27th June 1898 to 12th June 1964 and Alexander Barclay Russell (Sandy), 3rd March 1900 to November 1980.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

My grandfather, Edward Bacheler Russell, and his first wife, Amy, are commemorated on the red granite cross. I am sure her name was Amy not Agnes but I have not looked closely at the inscription which would have been erected by Edward. My grandmother, Mary Dorothea nee Barclay, is commemorated on the slate slab that was placed there by her sons EDBR and ABR. Since your picture was taken, a small slate slab has been added commemorating her second son Alexander Barclay Russell (Sandy), 1900 to 1980, whose ashes are also buried in that grave. My father's ashes, Edward David Bacheler Russell (Ned), 1898 to 1964, are in Norwich. I have a photo of Sandy's slab; would you like an electronic copy to add to your archive? Your photos of the cross and large slate slab are definitely better than mine so I would appreciate electronic copies; I might even be able to read what grandfather wrote about his first wife who died in childbirth.

My cemetery research now includes Hither Green ( Lewisham ) where Alexander Barclay -Russell was cremated & photo of headstone would greatly aid in this .
