1890711819first name on monumentJohn was born in Higham, a village on the Hoo Peninsular in north Kent. His parents were John Smoker (1791-1846) and Lucy nee Randall (1785-1868). His wife was Mary nee Shackle (1820-1898). He worked on the railway all his life and, in 1881 census was a plate layer living at Railway Gate House, Mill Hall Aylesford. They had 12 children. One of their sons, Alexander joined the army and eventually became the Chief Warden at the Tower of London.
