Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Burdus Redford was my husband's Great Great Grandfather and this image will greatly enhance the family history I am putting together. What a wonderful service you are offering to people. I think it is a very kind and worthwhile thing to do. Another of his relatives died on his way home to Australia after being gassed on WWI and the correspondence between the parents and the government requesting such a simple thing as a photo of their dead son's grave was heartrending. The poor parents died never having received such a simple memento of their brave son even though the grave was on Australian soil - but on the other side of the country. Such a pity there were not such kind people as you back then.

I have an ancestor, one of my 2nd great-grandfathers, who had the name Burdus Redford Melcher. I've wondered where his name came from as it is not common in the U.S. This may be a coincidence as my Burdus was born in Maine in 1849, but no one else in the family has that name. His father was a ship captain, so it's possible he met the English Burdus in his travels. Thank you!
