first name on monumentJohn Pounder left Hartlepool in 1849 for a new life in Manchester he married Hannah Waller from Yorkshire and opened a fish mongers in Salford Manchester. After the death of his wife Hannah 1n 1875 and the marriages of his sons William Ainsley and Frederick Ash Pounder , he returned to Hartlepool to live with his sister Ann Green and died in August 1881 and was buried with his parents and brother at St Hilda's.

A prominent feature of the Headland, St Hilda's church was built in the late twelfth century but the south doorway shows in its decoration that it belonged to an earlier Norman church.
