William Carter
husband of Emma CarterWilliam and Emma Carter, and their 7 children, arrived in New Zealand in 1875 on the S.S. Colima, from San Francisco. I got this information from the Auckland Star,Vol.VI, Issue 1818,13 Dec 1875. The Colima later sank off Mexico,in 1895.Their 11mth old daughter, Edith Alice is also buried at Oratia in 1880, and maybe their son, Henry Chellis, who was accidently killed at the age of 16, in 1898.

For more information on one of the individual named above, please click on their name.

Please note that all ages and dates of birth in red have been calculated and are probably not on the monument.

The calculated dates of birth should be treated with caution as in many cases it can be one year out.

The calculated dates of birth should also be treated with caution as the ages given on monuments are often inaccurate.

The names above are all the names that are listed on the grave monument. It is most likely that only the entries with dates and ages are interred in the grave.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Emma and William Carter are my direct great, great grandparents on both sides of my family. My mother went to school in Oratia also. I have only found out about these photos of the grave(s) recently and am thrilled. I can't get over from Australia for a while and have got a bit stuck for information about William. (his deathdate and where he was buried, as he supposedly remarried) So I would be VERY grateful to see these images. Thanking you so much. Raewyn

Emma Carter is my great great grandmother. I requested an image before but it never arrived, even although I gave a correct email address. I look forward to thanking you for its appearance. I am grateful you offer this service. Thank you.

William Carter and his wife Emma Hall are my 3rd great grandparents. I am descended from their son Ernest Arther Carter & Ella Maude Nightingale. Then their daughter Ella Maude Carter & John Harold Ernest Owens. Then their son William John Owens & Muriel Mary Lennox, My parents are their daughter Linda Ann Owens & Stephen Ronald Joseph Simpson. I actually went out and took photos of the stones myself many years ago, however had a data loss on my computer and the pictures are no more. Now I live in California, unfortunately I cannot go out there and re-take the pictures. I would appreciate receiving the image you have. Regards, Joanne Simpson Bitonio
