Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

We are looking for symbols used for French sailors, to put on my father-in-law's marker, to satisfy the French cousins that his service will be recognised. We hope this marker has such a symbol. He was also with the military committee of the UN and also served in it's civil service, before becoming an American citizen.
