Bensley Cyrus Lawrence | 1888 | 54 | 1834 | first name on monument | Cyrus Bensley Lawrence was murdered by an employee of his at Baltic Sawmills in Tunbridge Wells, along with the employee's friend - the person who fired the fatal shot, apparently after the pair either drew lots or tossed a coin to decide. His wife Maria and his children were the subject of a local appeal to raise funds for them following his death. Both of his killers were hanged in Maidstone prison on 2nd January 1889, one of them (Charles Dobell, the other being named William Gower) was 17 at the time and the last person under the age of 18 to be executed in the UK. |
