Sarah Lardner | 1830 | 33 | 1797 | first name on monument | This is Sarah Lardner nee Sarah Darley Woodhead. She was the wife of Joseph Lardner, a comedian - a journeyman actor/dancer who began his career in London performing at the Sans Pareil Theatre in the Strand later the Adelphi. She too was on the stage and they travelled Colne, Clitheroe, Whitby and Scarborough. Joseph went on to work at the Sunderland theatre and was also a dance master. He died in a drowning accident on the River Wear in 1833 - so his words on this memorial were quite prophetic. They had a child born in Scarborough in 1830 called Hannah Mary Lardner who died soon after. |
