Robert William Munro MacMillan
1934781856first name on monumentRobert William Munro MacMillan was born on 08 Dec 1855 in Cuttack, Orissa, India and married Eliza Ann Beale on 15 Jan 1880 in Cuttack, Orissa, India. He was the son of John MacMillan (06 Feb 1829 Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland - 28 Jul 1898 Cuttack, Orissa, India) and Aurora Clementina Eliza Atkinson (29 Jan 1839 Cuttack, Orissa, India - 21 Aug 1909 Cuttack, Orissa, India). John & Aurora were married on 30 Jul 1854 at the Baptist Mission Chapel, Cuttack, Orissa, India. Aurora's family had been based in India since at least the 1780s and the earliest extant record for her family shows her ancestor Elizabeth Topher as a 'Native' on the marriage record to Samuel Middleditch in Calcutta in 1788. John MacMillan's parents were a Master Slater called Robert MacMillan (26 Dec 1800 Tormore, Kilmory district, Isle of Arran, Scotland - 01 Aug 1865 Cunninghame Combination Poorhouse, Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland; buried in the graveyard at Irvine Old Parish Church) and his wife Marion Munro (22 Sep 1801 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland - 17 Dec 1869 Townshead, Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland) who married on 30 May 1828 in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. Therefore the names of RWM MacMillan's paternal grandparents explains the choices for two of his Christian names.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Robert's younger sister Catherine Eliza Buckley MacMillan (who was born, married and died in India) was my great-great-grannie and it was Catherine's daughter Althea Kathleen Barker who brought my branch of the family back to England in the mid-1930s. My grandmother Daphne Patricia Stuart Anderson (Althea's daughter) moved to Kent with my grandpa and their children in the 1970s. I only ordered Robert's death certificate very recently and discovered that he died in Edenbridge, so it is wonderful that his gravestone has been included in this database and we hope to visit on Sunday 4th August 2013 with my cousins while they are visiting us. It would be extremely useful to have a higher-resolution version of the photo to help us in trying to find Robert's grave in the graveyard. I look forward to hearing from you.

Eliza Ann's father was my maternal g-g-grandfather. Eliza was known by my mother as Aunt Lizzie.I have been trying to research the family tree for a number of years, so the more information/documentation I have the better. I'm sorry that I cannot assist as a volunteer as I am from the other side of the world! Thank you in anticipation :)
