I believe Thomas Sowray is ancestor. We have a family story that a Mary Sowray born 1827 possibly in Stillington was dis-inherited for Marrying William Jackson the son of a KirkbyMoorside school master in 1845 at St Olaves in York by license for marrying beneath her status. Mary was supposed to be related to Scotts Jewellers in Leeds. Thomas Sowray's daughter Elizabeth married Joseph Scott 25/1/1866 in St Peters Leeds. Currently I am attempting to find how Mary Sowray born 1827 links in. Unfortunately Mary does not appear on the IGI only in the 1851 census onwards and is thus proving difficult to link in. When she married she also did not give her parents details. Mary and Williams Children's names certainly suggest a strong link to Thomas Sowray by repeating this as Thomas Sowray Jackson. However, I suspect Mary was dis-inherited by Thomas Sowray who I understand had a large shop in KirkbyMoorside. Sorry I probaby live too far away to be much help with your records as I live in South Cumbria. Regards Chris Holroyd

Trying to link if these are the same Sowrays and Woods from Stillington . Dorothy Sowray daughter of Thomas sowray born KirkbyMoorside in 1806 was the granddaughter of William Sowray of Stillington per parish records. The Woods and Sowray families in Stillington are related through Elizabeth Hall b 1749 married Thomas Wood. Her grandmother was Mary Sowray b1718 in Stillington daughter of John
