252StanbridgeJohn Stanbridge1772771849id: 808736539513491The youngest son of Walter and Mary was John STANBRIDGE, born on 26th January 1772. At the time of the death of his father, John was not yet ten years old. We have not ascertained whether his elder brothers Thomas, Walter and Henry stayed at ’Old House’ with their mother once they had married, or whether they moved out. Henry had evidently moved to Tatsfield in Surrey by 1798, since his three middle children were born there from 1798 to 1802. However, John married Elizabeth GARDNER at West Hoathly on 2nd June 1800 and features as the ratepayer at ’Old House’ in 1803 when his mother appears to have moved out. Henry is found to have returned to West Hoathly by 1804 and to stay with John until 1809 when he moved to take over a windmill! Thus, John was still living at ‘Old House’ in 1810. All of John and Elizabeth’s children were baptized either in Ardingly or in West Hoathly, except possibly Elizabeth whose baptism we have not located. Thus, we find that they continued to live in West Hoathly at least until after 1818. We then move to 1836 and 1837 to find that John has moved to the parish of Worth where he occupies a significant farm based upon Fen Place. As John aged, he contracted his responsibilities and increased those of his son John as is mentioned below. At some time after 1843, John and Elizabeth , together with their son William (below) and grandson Walter (below) moved to Rough Beech Farm in Burstow in Surrey. There John died on 20th August 1849, aged 77 years. He was buried at St Margaret‘s Church, West Hoathly on 24 August 1849. (NBI). John had chosen to be buried in the parish where he had lived for the earlier part of his life, West Hoathly. His gravestone may be seen just to the side of the main gate. Elizabeth was buried with him on 8 March 1867, when she passed on at Hill Place Farm, East Grinstead on 2nd March 1867, aged 86 years old.
