44HarrisonEmma Florence Harrison1932id: 427934001011971Emma Florence Harrison was born on Feb. 20, 1858 in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. Her father, Richard Harrison, was a manufacturer of fish hooks and sewing needles in Redditch. She started her life with the desire to become an artist. Three paintings by her were exhibited at the Royal Academy at the turn of the 20th century. Emma's sister Rosaline Isabel Harrison married Frederick Scorer. His father was one of the original partners of Fortnum & Mason. The Scorers built a home --Kent Hatch House -- near Crockham Hill in 1882. When both Frederick and Rosaline died, Emma and her remaining sister Blanche Amy Burtt sold Kent Hatch House and divided the proceeds. Emma apparently used her share of the estate to purchase a house and property known as Bramsells, just south of Edenbridge. She remained there until her own death in 1932. The property then passed to her sister Blanche Amy. Both Kent Hatch House and Bramsells still stand today. I visited both this summer (August/Sept. 2013) but was unable to locate Emma's grave. After 1978, Emma Florence Harrison was mistakenly believed to be the illustrator for Blackie & Son, known only as Florence Harrison. This mistake was uncovered in 2009 and evidence published that the real artist was Florence Susan Harrison. I have written a book entitled FLORENCE HARRISON; A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY in which the lives of both Emma Florence and Florence Susan are described and contrasted. I am delighted to see this grave was posted on the internet. Sandy Hargrove Colorado, USA Nov. 2013
