In the service of his majesty the late Shah Soojah-Ool-Moolk; who nobly fell at the head of a small band of devoted followers; in action with an overpowering number of Ghilzie insurgents; near Ghuznee in Afghanistan; 4th November. This cenotaph has been erected by the surviving British officers of that service; friends and companions in arms; who deeply lamenting his untimely fate knew and admired his great skill as a soldier; his sterling worth and honesty as a man. John Woodburn was the son of David Woodburn and Janet Caldwell. He was born 20 Apr 1803 near Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. His father was Factor of the Craigengillan Estate. John enlisted as a Cadet in the Bengal Army in 1820. | |||
