Emile Gentil was a French naval officer; explorer and colonial administrator. From 1890-1892 he mapped the river network of Gabon; and in 1895 he set out to find the most practical route from gabon to Chad. In 1897 he signed a peace treaty creating a French protectorate in Gabon; and in 1899 attacked the Sudanese slave-trader Rabah. In 1900 Gentil founded Fort Lamy; the current capital of Chad. From 1902-1910 he was Governor-General of the French Congo. Port Gentil in Gabon is named in his honour. He died in Bordeaux.
