David Holland Erskine was born at Kingsbarn, Fife, Scotland on 4 September 1828, the second son of Sir David Erskine, 1st Baronet of Cambo. D. H. Erskine later served as a Captain in the 92nd Highlanders, as well as H.B.M. Consul to Madeira. He had married Augusta Jane Erskine in 1856 in Madeira, and they had a total of nine children. David died prematurely at Chillingworth near Torquay, Devon, on 20th June 1869, aged only 40.
