His father was a Major-General in the Bombay Army. He was educated at Clifton College, Bristol and later was Assistant Manager and Secretary to Messrs C.T.Hook and Company, Snodland Paper Mills, Kent, England. Archibald married Ethel May Trevenen Holland in London 1911. After the death of his wife and infant daughter, Archibald lived with his unmarried sister Eliza in Edinburgh. He died at 88 Leamington Terrace, Edinburgh on 22 Apr 1939.
